Attention in The American is turning to basketball now that football is over (reminder: UCF won the national championship) and conference play starts to shift into high gear. Last night saw the Memphis Tigers come alive and come together as a cohesive unit to top the Tulane Green Wave thanks to a strong performance from Jeremiah Martin.

For Jeremiah Martin, one career-high performance deserved another.

Three days after scoring a career-high 28 points in a win over Tulsa, Martin, the University of Memphis's junior guard, dropped in 31 points to set a new mark and lead the Tigers to a 96-89 American Athletic Conference victory over Tulane. Martin's effort helped the U of M to improve to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in AAC play.

Nebraska fans have been desperately hoping that UCF's quarterback would transfer out of Orlando and come play in Lincoln so the Huskers could see some of the brilliant offense that Knights fans saw all season.

Another day and another example of blatant disrespect for the American Athletic Conference. It's not all bad, however, as three teams finished in the Top 25 of the final AP Poll with the UCF Knights coming in at No. 6, the USF Bulls taking the No. 21 spot and the Memphis Tigers rounding things off at No. 25.

The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league's weekly men's basketball honors for the week of Jan. 1-7.
