Indiana Hoosiers Face No. 22 Seton Hall in the Gavitt Games

The 118th season of Indiana basketball continues on Wednesday night when the Hoosiers visit #22 Seton Hall in the Gavitt Games. The Hoosiers are coming off an 86-77 win over Howard in the Hoosier Tip-Off Classic, while Seton Hall defeated Monmouth, 75-65, in the Preseason NIT on Sunday in Newark.

The Hoosiers lead the series with the Pirates, 2-1. The last meeting was an 83-69 IU triumph in Indianapolis in 1998. IU also defeated SHU, 78-74 in the Championship Game of the 1992 Preseason NIT in Madison Square Garden. The Pirates notched a win against the Hoosiers in the 1988 West Regional Semifinal, 78-65, in Denver.

This will be the first of four games against nationally-ranked programs in the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Hoosiers will host Duke (Nov. 29), travel to Louisville (Dec. 9) and play Notre Dame (Dec. 16) in Indianapolis.

(1) For players with at least 2 games played, IU sophomore De'Ron Davis leads the Big Ten in shooting at 81.3% after the first weekend of play. The Colorado native has made 13 of 16 shots. He had career-high's with 17 points, 3 blocked shots and 29 minutes played against Howard. He has lost 25 pounds since May and is now playing at 246 pounds. He is averaging 15.5 points per game.
(2) Freshman Justin Smith filled in for the injured Juwan Morgan and had 16 points and 12 rebounds. It was the first freshman double-double since Thomas Bryant had 12 points and 11 rebounds at Iowa in 2016.
(3) Freshman Aljami Durham came off the bench and had 16 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists against Howard.

The Coaches
• Archie Miller is the 29th head coach in Indiana men's basketball history. The 38-year old native of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, comes to IU after serving the previous six seasons as head coach at the University of Dayton, where he won Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championships in 2016 and 2017. He was Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2017. He guided the Flyers to a 139-63 record (69.8) and a 68-34 mark (66.7) in the Atlantic 10. He took Dayton to the NCAA Tournament each of the last four years with the Flyers advancing to the Elite Eight in the 2014 Tournament. UD was nationally ranked in three of Miller's six seasons (2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16).

• Kevin Willard is in his eighth year of leading Seton Hall. He has guided them to a 130-102 record and NCAA Tournament appearances in the last two seasons. The Pirates are picked to finish 2nd in the Big East Conference.

News & Notes
• IU defeated Creighton, 86-65, in Bloomington in November of 2015 in its first Gavitt Games appearance.

• The Hoosiers have an all-time record of 81-36 against teams from the Big East Conference.

• In the last three halves of basketball for the Hoosiers, they have shot 55.1% from the field (43 for 78). The Hoosiers shot 54.1% from the floor against Howard and limited the Bison to 35.7% shooting from the field.

• The Hoosiers have been hit early this season by the injury bug. Senior forward Collin Hartman has not played in the regular season due to a groin injury and sophomore forward Juwan Morgan injured his ankle early in the game against Howard and did not return. The duo has a combined 58 career starts and were key contributors to the team's 2016 Big Ten Championship.

• Senior Robert Johnson needs 1 point to become the 51st player to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in his career as a Hoosier.

• The Hoosiers will return home for the Hoosier Tip-Off Classic to face South Florida on Sunday, November 19 at 6 p.m. IU also will host Arkansas State (Nov. 22) and Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24) to round out the multi-team event. Indiana will finish off the four-game homestand against Duke (Nov. 29) in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
