Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables has been named the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week after leading the Sooners to a 34-30 win over No. 3 Texas on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. announced.

Under the direction of Venables, Oklahoma notched its first win over an AP top-three team since the 2017 season and fifth victory in the last six meetings over its Red River rival. The Sooners registered season highs in rushing yards (201) and sacks (five), while allowing only one sack. Texas entered the game allowing just 94.6 rushing yards and 1.8 sacks per game and averaging 2.6 sacks per contest.

Trailing 30-27 with 1:17 to go and no timeouts, Oklahoma drove 75 yards in five plays to score the winning touchdown when quarterback and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week Dillon Gabriel found wide receiver Nic Anderson in the end zone from three yards out with 15 seconds remaining. OU totaled 486 yards of offense and scored 34 points against a Texas team that entered the game giving up 290.8 yards and 12.8 points per contest.

Defensively, the Sooners registered three turnovers, including interceptions on each of Texas' first two possessions of the game (UT had thrown just one interception in its first five games). Oklahoma also mounted a tremendous goal line stand early in the fourth quarter. Facing first-and-goal at its own 1-yard line, OU held the Longhorns out of the end zone on four tries on the Texas end of the Cotton Bowl.

The Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of an FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2023 season. The winner of the 2023 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
