Another close game. Another time the breaks just didn't go Sam Houston's way.

The Bearkats kicked the go-ahead field goal with just under two minutes remaining only to see Florida International tie it with five seconds left and eventually win 33-27 in double overtime at Bowers Stadium on Wednesday.

Sam Houston scored on the first play of overtime to take a 27-20 lead. The Panthers were able to match it with a one-yard quarterback sneak on fourth and goal from the 1.

FIU returned the favor and scored on its first drive of the second overtime, and the Bearkats failed to find the end zone on their attempt to fall to 0-7 on the season and 0-4 in Conference USA.

Sam Houston looked poised to win its first game of the season when Panther quarterback Keyone Jenkins fumbled the ball while looking to pass with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter.

Defensive lineman Jevon Leon recovered it at the 18, and Colby Sessums was able to put SHSU on top 20-17 with a 32-yard field goal 30 seconds later.

The Bearkats were closing in on the win in regulation when Chris Scott and Issiah Nixon recorded back-to-back sacks that a forced 4th and 18 deep in FIU territory. But Jenkins raced 23 yards to pick up the first down as the Panthers were able drive the field to knot the game at 20 with a 36-yard field goal with five seconds left in regulation.

The majority of the first half did not feature much from the Sam Houston offense.

The opening drive was going well as the Bearkats went on the march highlighted by a 10-yard run by running back John Gentry and two 13-yard passes to Jordan Yates and Noah Smith to get the ball to the FIU 33.

Shoemaker threw an interception on the next play, and the Panthers (4-4, 0-5) ran it back to the SHSU 9. The defense held and Sam Houston snuffed out a fake field on fourth and goal from the 11 to force the turnover on downs.

After FIU kicked a field goal to take the early lead, the Bearkats had a chance to tie the game but had a 40-yard field goal attempt blocked in the second quarter. The Panthers took advantage and turned it into a touchdown to go up 10-0 with 5:57 left in the half.

That woke Sam Houston up.

On the ensuing possession, a 19-yard pass to Al'Vonte Woodard and 12-and 11-yard receptions by Smith and Gentry led to a 10-yard touchdown pass from Shoemaker to Elijah Sohn to cut the lead to 10-7.

The defense continued to hold steady, and Colby Sessums connected on a 30-yard field goal as time expired to send the game into the half tied at 10.

The Panthers retook the lead with a touchdown in the third quarter, but once again, the Bearkats responded.

The just under 2:30 left in the third, Sam Houston went on the march as Shoemaker hit Sohn for 10 yards, Smith for 10 yards and scampered for an 11-yard run to move deep into FIU territory. Those key places set up the game-tying touchdown, a 20-yard pitch and catch from Shoemaker to Smith down the right sideline at the 12:44 mark of the fourth.
