University of Hawai'i head football coach Timmy Chang announced three new members to his coaching staff – defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Dennis Thurman, co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison, and defensive tackles coach Jeff Reinebold. The three have more than 100 years of coaching experience.

Thurman, who has 35+ years of coaching experience, joins the Rainbow Warriors after spending last season at the University of Colorado, where he served as director of quality control. Morrison and Reinebold both return to UH after previous stints – Morrison was quarterbacks coach from 1999-2007 and Reinebold was defensive line coach from 2006-07 and director of player development in 2022.

Thurman, a nine-year NFL veteran mostly with the Dallas Cowboys, has a wealth of coaching experience at both the professional and collegiate ranks. Prior to Colorado, he served as defensive coordinator at Jackson State from 2020-22, where he helped the Tigers to two Southwestern Athletic Conference championships and a pair of Celebration Bowl appearances.

Under Thurman, JSU's defense was one of the top in the Football Championship Subdivision, leading FCS in 2022 in total defense (252.4 ypg), passing yards allowed (135.4 ypg), sacks (3.69/gm) and third down defense (25.9%) and was second in scoring defense (13.5 ppg). In JSU's two championship seasons, the Tigers recorded seven defensive touchdowns and allowed only 14.2 points per game.

"Coach Thurman brings a wealth of experience with an NFL pedigree," Chang said. "Coached some of the best this game has ever seen. I am excited for him to lead our defense."

Prior to JSU, the Santa Monica, Calif., native coached in the NFL from 2002-16 with several teams including as defensive coordinator with the New York Jets (2013-14) and Buffalo Bills (2015-16). The USC alum also coached at his alma mater from 1993-2000 as defensive backs coach.

Morrison returns to Mānoa, where he spent nine seasons as quarterbacks coach, including 2000-04 when he mentored Chang. While at UH, he developed two of the NCAA's most prolific quarterbacks – Chang and Colt Brennan, the latter of whom was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2007 – along with Dan Robinson and Nick Rolovich on former head coach June Jones' staff. Under Morrison's tutelage, Chang went on to become the NCAA's all-time leading passer, throwing for 17,072 yards while Brennan broke 29 NCAA records, including passing touchdowns in a season (58) and career (131).

"I'm excited to welcome back a mentor," Chang said. "He has an in-depth knowledge of our offense and our quarterbacks will benefit greatly from his experience."

Following his time at UH, the Santa Monica, Calif., native coached at SMU for seven seasons, helping the Mustangs to four bowl appearances and two Conference USA divisional titles. At the Hilltop, he mentored Garrett Gilbert, who would go on to a 10-year NFL career. Morrison also spent part the 2021 season on the Washington State staff as quarterbacks coach and coached in the XFL with the Seattle Sea Dragons during the 2022 and '23 seasons.

Reinebold rejoins Chang's coaching staff after serving in a non-coaching capacity in 2022 as director of player development. He returned to the Canadian Football League in 2023, where he spent the majority of his 40+ year coaching career, with his third stint with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as special teams coordinator.

"I had the pleasure of working with Coach Reinebold our first year," Chang said. "He has a passion for Hawai'i and this program. He is a great coach. Again, he brings a lot of experience."

Reinebold previously spent three seasons on Jones' staff at UH. He joined the program in 2005 as a graduate assistant and was promoted to full-time assistant, coaching the defensive line in 2006 and '07. Reinebold mentored three lineman who were drafted by NFL teams – Ikaika Alama-Francis, Melila Purcell and David Veikune.

The South Bend, Ind., native also coached in NFL Europe and collegiately with Dartmouth, Montana, Penn, Rocky Mountain College, New Mexico, Louisiana Tech, UH, and SMU. He spent two seasons as head coach of the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1997-98.

In addition, Chang announced that linebackers coach Chris Brown will also assume the role of associate head coach. Brown, a UH letterwinner, begins his third season with the program. Following his UH playing career, Brown played for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens from 2003-05, where Thurman was on the defensive coaching staff.

Prior to joining Chang's staff, Brown was the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nev., from 2015-21. He helped the Gaels to back-to-back national championships in 2015 and '16. He also coached at Damien Memorial High School and Saint Louis School.
