Frank Nazar III and Rutger McGroarty of the University of Michigan ice hockey team were selected by the Chicago Blackhawks and the Winnipeg Jets with the 13th and 14th overall picks, respectively, in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

Nazar has been with the US National Team Development Program the last two seasons. The Mount Clemens, Mich., native led the squad in 2020-21 with 57 points (28 goals, 27 assists) in 45 games. Overall, he concluded his time in Plymouth with 128 points (58G, 70A) in 103 games while adding 71 points in USHL games. Nazar won a silver medal with Team USA at the 2022 U18 World Championships where he had nine points in six games and also played in the Biosteel All-America game. He also claimed a silver medal at the 2020 Youth Olympic games. Nazar previously played for Honeybaked and Little Caesars, winning five state titles.

McGroarty, a native of Lincoln, Neb., has spent the last two seasons with the USNTD, totaling 110 points (55G, 55A) in 107 games with the USNTDP and adding 52 points in USHL contests. McGroarty captained the US to a silver medal at the 2022 U18 World Championships, where he tallied nine points in six games and also was a member of the 2021 team. He captured a gold medal as team captain and leading scorer at the 2021 Five Nations, and earned a silver medal at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games. This past year, he was named the Player of the Game for the 2022 Biosteel All-America Game. A member of the USA Hockey U14 National Championship team. he also is a three-time state champion. McGroarty previously played for the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies and Honeybaked AAA. He is first Nebraska-born player to be selected in the NHL Draft since 2013.
