UCLA Bruins Outlast No. 12 Long Beach State, 2-1

Michael Toglia collected three hits including a solo home run and Chase Strumpf drove in the game-winning run as the UCLA baseball team defeated No. 12 Long Beach State, 2-1, in 11 innings on Tuesday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Tied at 1-1 in the 11th inning, the Bruins earned the walk-off victory as Sean Bouchard led off with a triple off the right-center field wall and two batters later Strumpf lifted a fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly and the game-winning RBI.

Long Beach State scored the game's first run in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a Bruin error, but UCLA responded in the bottom half of the inning as Toglia launched a solo home run deep to right-center field to tie the game at 1-1.

Jake Bird (4-0) earned the win tossing the final 1.1 innings in relief without allowing a run. Bird, Scott Burke, Nick Scheidler and Ryan Garcia combined to throw 6.0 shutout innings and allowed just two hits and one walk out of the bullpen. LBSU's Josh Advocate (3-1) suffered the loss allowing one run on three hits in 1.2 innings in relief.

UCLA starter Justin Hooper tossed 5.0 innings allowing one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts, while Long Beach State's starter AJ Jones allowed one run on three hits in 6.0 innings of work.

UCLA finished with two runs on seven hits and two errors, while Long Beach State ended the game with one run on five hits and no errors.

The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium this weekend when they host top-ranked Oregon State for a three-game Pac-12 series starting on Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday's game with be televised live ESPNU with Roxy Bernstein and Wes Clements on the call with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. (PT).

Game Notes: UCLA now has five walk-off win this season ... The Bruins improve to 5-3 this season against top-25 ranked opponents ... Michael Toglia hit his third home run of the year and has home runs in back-to-back games ... Justin Hooper tied a career-high with 5.0 innings pitched ... Hooper's five strikeouts were the second-most for him this season ... This is the second extra-inning game in a row played by the Bruins and their sixth on the season ... The game was delayed for 17 minutes prior to the start of the seventh inning due to fog.
