Duke men's soccer head coach John Kerr has announced the 2021 team captains in advance of the season opener against Liberty on Friday. Senior Eliot Hamill and sophomores JT Harms, Antino Lopez, Lewis McGarvey and Peter Stroud will headline an entirely new group after the graduations of last year's captains Jack Doran, Matthias Frick and Will Pulisic.

"We are happy to announce that we have five captains this year," said Kerr. "Eliot Hamill, Peter Stroud, Lewis McGarvey, JT Harms and Antino Lopez have displayed captain qualities over the past year. Eliot, the lone senior, brings the most experience to the group. He has gone through the ups and the downs of the program and can give a great overall perspective. Peter, Lewis, JT and Tino all bring unique qualities to the table and each offer something special to the leadership of the team. Our coaching staff couldn't be more excited to be working with these fine, upstanding young men."

Hamill leads as the only senior in the group, who competed in the majority of games in goal for the Blue Devils last season. Hamill collected two shutouts and made 30 saves in nine matches, compiling a 2-3-3 record as a starter. He also notched a 1.12 goals against average and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team last season.

Harms has emerged as a leader in goal, who has shown tremendous promise across two games last season and the 2021 preseason. Harms made appearances against UNC-Wilmington and Kentucky in the 2020-21 season and helped contribute to a 2-0 preseason shutout of No. 24 High Point on Aug. 17, joining Hamill and freshman Grant Farley.

Lopez has filled a versatile role with the Blue Devils, playing 16 games at various positions during the 2020-21 season. A midfielder by trade, Lopez has stepped in to play sterling defense and was voted the Blue Devils Most Valuable Defensive Player as a freshman. The Las Vegas, Nev., native was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team for his efforts, ranking third on the team in minutes with 1,543 and helping the Blue Devils notch four shutouts.

McGarvey was an anchor on the defensive end right from the start, playing all 17 matches for the Blue Devils during the 2020-21 season. The Belfast, Ireland native scored his first career goal at NC State on Oct. 9 and was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week for his effort. McGarvey also finished fifth on the team in total minutes.

Stroud made the most of his freshman season, stepping into a leadership role immediately as one of the team's top performers. The Blue Devils lone representative on an All-ACC Team, Stroud was selected to both the All-ACC Third Team and All-ACC Freshman Team and was recently named to this season's 2021 ACC Preseason Watch List. A dependable, seasoned midfielder, Stroud finished last season with the second most total minutes at 1,591, as well as three assists.
