Mother Nature provided the rain and wind. The University of Memphis football team brought the lightning in the Tigers' 2017 season-opening 37-29 victory over Louisiana Monroe Thursday night.

For the past two decades, Sun Devil Football and opener night victories have become synonymous.

That held true once again on Thursday night, as the Sun Devils (1-0) eased past the New Mexico State Aggies for a 37-31 win. The victory was the program's 19th straight in a home openers - good for the fifth-longest streak nationally.

Georgia opens the 2017 season on Saturday, September 2 against the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The Bulldogs are 93-27-3 in season openers, including winning 17 of their past 20. Last year, the Kirby Smart era began with a 33-24 victory over No. 22 North Carolina in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic held in Atlanta in the Georgia Dome.

The second season of the Mike Norvell era in Memphis will kickoff Thursday night in what most are forecasting to be severe thunderstorms as the Tigers welcome Louisiana Monroe to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
