Texas became the first program since 2015 to capture both the men’s and women’s titles at the 2021 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship held at Texas Tech’s Sports Performance Center. It is the fourth time UT has swept the Big 12 indoor meet.

The men’s title came down to the 4x400-meter relay. The Longhorns led by two points entering the event. The quartet of Jon Maas, Micaiah Harris, Charles Brockman III and Willington Wright secured the relay championship with a time of 3:07.10.

Texas finished with 141 points, followed by Texas Tech with 133, Oklahoma 89, Oklahoma State 75 and TCU 70 to round out the top five. The UT men captured their ninth indoor title and first since 2017.

The Longhorn women won their fourth consecutive title and 12th overall indoors by securing 154.5 points. Oklahoma State finished second with 103, while Kansas State (100.5), Texas Tech (95.5) and Baylor (93) rounded out the top five.

Four individuals compiled 20 points apiece to earn the High Point Award of the meet. On the women’s side Texas’ Kynnedy Flannel and Texas Tech’s Ruth Usoro shared honors. The men’s honorees included Iowa State’s Wesley Kiptoo and K-State’s Tejaswin Shankar.

There were four meet records set on Saturday – all on the women’s side. The Texas women swept the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash. Chanel Brissett broke a 15-year old Big 12 record with a dash of 7.90 seconds in the hurdles. Her run now ranks No. 1 in the NCAA and tied for No. 6 in the World.

Flannel captured the women’s 60-meter dash with a sprint of 7.25 seconds. She would then set the meet record in the 200 meters and establish the No. 2 mark in the NCAA by winning the event in 22.55 seconds. On the men’s side, UT’s Micaiah Harris repeated as champion by setting the school record and the second-best mark nationally this season with his sprint of 20.38.

For a second day, Texas Tech’s Usoro captured another Big 12 record in the jumps. She leapt 14.36 meters (47’ 1.50”) for a nation-leading mark and meet record. Usoro is the first champion in the event to eclipse 14 meters.

Coming into the Championship, Baylor’s Aaliyah Miller had the NCAA’s No. 2 time in the 800-meter run. She did not exceed that mark, but Miller set a Big 12 meet record with a time of 2:02.98. Iowa State’s Jason Gomez finished first in the men’s event in 1:48.48.

Entering this weekend, TCU’s Chengetayi Mapaya had already recorded the nation’s top mark in the men’s triple jump (16.85m/55’ 3.50”). On his first effort, Mapaya sprinted to a title-clinching 16.55 meters (54’ 3.75”) before faulting on his second attempt and passing on the last four attempts.

Texas’ Davicia Patterson captured the women’s 600-yard run with a brisk time of 1:18.85. She was the first champion to reach the 1:18 threshold since Bowerman Award winner and Olympian Courtney Okolo accomplished the feat in 2015. Texas Tech’s Sven Cepus won the men’s side with his gallop of 1:08.57.

Baylor’s Deshaun Jones captured the men’s 60-meter hurdles in 7.86 seconds, while Texas Tech’s Jacolby Shelton earned the 60-meter dash crown in 6.63 seconds.

In the Mile Run, Oklahoma State sophomore Taylor Roe helped the Cowgirls win the event for the fifth time in the last six years with a pace of 4:49.17. Texas freshman Yusuf Bizimana captured the men’s event in 4:05.44.

Ashton Hicks gave Oklahoma State its first title in the 400 meters with his sprint of 46.02 seconds, while Texas’ Stacey Williams earned a first-place nod of 51.60 seconds in the women’s event.

Texas Tech’s Takieddine Hedeilli helped the Red Raider men capture a valuable 10 points by repeating as champion in the 1,000 meters with a run of 2:23.70. Oklahoma State’s Sivan Auerback won the women’s event in 2:46.77.

Oklahoma’s Kristo Simulask became the first Sooner to capture the men’s heptathlon by recording 5,569 points. He finished no worse than fifth in each event and placed first in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.63 meters (15’ 2-.75”).

Alexandra Emilianov of Kansas secured the shot put crown with her toss of 16.74 meters (54’ 11.25”), while UT’s Adrian Piperi became the second four-time champion on the men’s side with a toss of 21.00 meters (68’ 10.75”).

A pace of 9:22.72 helped Oklahoma State’s Gabby Hentemann place first in the women’s 3,000 meters, while Iowa State’s Kiptoo won his second distance event of the Championship with a time of 7:57.29 in the 3,000 meters.

Kansas’ Rylee Anderson won the women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.81 meters (5’ 11.25”) and K-State’s Shankar won his third-straight indoor title by clearing 2.21 meters (7’ 3.00”).
