After a career game in WKU's 45-14 win over Charlotte, senior Deon Yelder has been named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week, it was announced Wednesday morning. Yelder had career highs of seven catches for 92 yards - all in the first half - while scoring his second touchdown of the season, an 8-yarder on the Hilltoppers' opening drive.

It was the second time this season the Louisville native has been honored by the John Mackey Award Selection Committee, previously earning honorable mention status after recording six receptions and 54 yards - while adding a two-point conversion rush - vs. Louisiana Tech in Week 3. Oklahoma's Mark Andrews (four catches for 104 yards and a touchdown) and Arkansas State's Blake Mack (six catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns) were each honorable mention in Week 7.

Among WKU's 15 receivers who caught at least one pass, Yelder led them all with his seven receptions. Overall, his 92 yards sat behind wide receiver Kylen Towner's game (and career) high of 111. Yelder had "chunk" plays in the second quarter of 25 yards from quarterback Mike White and 26 yards on a trick play pass from wide receiver Nacarius Fant. On the season, Yelder ranks second on the Hilltoppers with 24 receptions and 272 yards, which includes three "chunk" plays. Meanwhile, his two touchdowns lead the club - to go along with a pair of two-point conversions.

This marks the second time this season that a Conference USA player has won the John Mackey TE of the Week award. Marshall's Ryan Yurachek was honored on Oct. 4 following his performance in a win at Cincinnati.

The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season. The John Mackey Award is a member of the NCFAA which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 23 awards boast over 745 years of tradition-selection excellence.
