The Bruins (1-0) outscored Cal 21-0 in the fourth quarter. Running back Wayne Knight, who joined Chesney from James Madison, recorded two of his career-best three touchdowns in the final 15 minutes. Backfield mate Anthony Woods, who finished with 118 yards on eight carries, had two rushing touchdowns of his own.

UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava completed 14 of 22 passes for 184 yards and an interception. He also rushed for a touchdown. Mikey Matthews hauled in four passes for a career-high 88 receiving yards to lead the Bruin receiving corps.

Defensively, UCLA got big plays from three newcomers. Linebacker Sammy Omosigho totaled a career-high 14 tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss. Ta’Shawn James collected two interceptions and Derrick Barksdale added a sack out of the defensive backfield.

Adam Mohammed led Cal (0-1) with 120 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries. He also had seven catches for 46 yards. Golden Bear signal caller Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele completed 24 of 41 passes for two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Cal’s opening drive went 75 yards on 10 plays, with Chase Hendricks finding the endzone from nine yards out via a screen pass from Sagapolutele. The Bruins responded emphatically, though, as Knight and Brian Rowe Jr. picked up sizeable gains. It was Iamaleava who scored UCLA’s first touchdown, though, running it in from nine yards after completing all four of his passes.

A 28-yard field goal by Towns McGough put the Golden Bears back in front at 12:46 of the second quarter. The Bruins once again had an answer, though, posting first downs on four of the ensuing drive’s five plays. Woods capped it with a 31-yard, second-effort run to paydirt.

Following a three-and-out, Iamaleava hit Matthews for a 33-yard gain to put UCLA on its way to another score. Eight plays later, Knight burst up the middle and into the endzone for his first touchdown as a Bruin. A frantic final two minutes started with alternating turnovers. Cal took advantage of its opportunity, driving 79 yards in two plays to set up an eight-yard scoring strike to Mason Mini. UCLA did not go quietly into the break, though, as Iamaleava found Matthews again over the middle for 43 yards to bring Mateen Bhaghani onto the field. Bhaghani’s 38-yard field goal gave the Bruins a 24-17 halftime lead.

The Golden Bears pulled level again by way of a 14-play, 85-yard drive that took 8:28 of the third quarter. Mohammed logged nine carries alone during the stretch, the last going for a one-yard touchdown.

A deflected Sagapolutele pass landed in the arms of James, who returned his first career interception 19 yards to the Cal 31-yard line with 7:01 left in the fourth. Knight wasted no time reclaiming the lead for UCLA, beating the Cal defense in a footrace to the endzone.

James found himself in the right place at the right time once more moments later, picking off another Sagapolutele pass. And again, it was Knight capitalizing. His four-yard push put the Bruins up two scores with 3:03 remaining. Then, following a fourth-down stop, Woods scampered 53 yards down the sideline to put an exclamation point on the night.

The Bruins open their home slate Saturday, Sept. 12 at 4:15 p.m. PT, when San Diego State visits Rose Bowl Stadium.
