For the second week in a row, Dawson Bryce was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced on Sunday afternoon (May 18).
Additionally, pitcher Blake Gillespie was named an Honorable Mention for the fourth time this year.
Bryce continued his torrid month of May this week, leading The American with a .600 batting average and 12 hits. He was only one of two players in the league to record 10 RBI and had a 1.469 OPS after totaling 19 bases from four doubles and one home run. Bryce had multiple hits in all four games last week, including a pair of games with four knocks, and had two games with 4+ RBIs. He has raked for the Niners in May, leading the team with a .451 batting average and 23 hits in 11 games this month to be the only CLT batter with at least 20 hits since the month changed.
Gillespie is making his return to the Honorable Mention ranks for the fourth time this season after setting the pace in Charlotte's 5-0 win in the series opener with Tulane. He struck out six batters in 4.0 innings while only issuing one walk to collect his second combined shutout of the season and fourth overall time blanking an opponent this year.
Bryce joins Gillespie as 49ers to win multiple weekly awards from the conference this year and is the first Charlotte hitter to earn multiple weekly awards in the same season since David McCabe took home a pair of Conference USA Hitter of the Week awards in 2021. With Bryce accomplishing the feat in back-to-back weeks, he joins Charlotte Hall of Famer Bo Robinson in 1998 as the only two batters to win a weekly award in consecutive weeks. Overall, he's the sixth player to win consecutive weekly awards after Adam Mills took home back-to-back Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week awards multiple times in 2007, as did Brock Hudgens in 2013. Aaron Bray took home four consecutive Rookie of the Week awards in the A-10 to start the 2006 season and Tyler Barnette closed out the 2013 season with back-to-back Rookie of the Week awards.
Charlotte enters the American Athletic Conference Championships this week as the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 7 Wichita State on Tuesday (May 20) at 4 p.m. from BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida. All games of the 2025 American Athletic Conference Championships will be streamed on ESPN+, with the championship game on Sunday airing live on ESPNNews.
