The Miami University baseball team fell 14-13 to Wake Forest in the third game of the Knoxville Regional Saturday afternoon. Miami finishes the season 35-23 overall, while the Demon Deacons rise to 37-21.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the top of the second inning, the Demon Deacons hit two home runs to take a 4-0 advantage.
  • Evan Appelwick responded with a double in the bottom of the second inning and reached third after a wild pitch. A fielding error by Wake Forest led to Appelwick scoring the RedHawk's first run and David Novak reaching first base. Shortly after, Dom Krupinkski was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch brought David Novak home and walked Tommy Harrison. Blake Buzzeo singled to the left side, scoring Krupinski and bringing Miami within one run at 4-3. Dillon Baker went on to reach first base after being walked to load the bases, and a pitch hit Anthony Zarlingo to even the score at four apiece.
  • Wake Forest added a run in the top of the third inning to reclaim the lead at 5-4. Numerous singles and a double added to the Demon Deacons' lead at 8-4 in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Baker smacked his 25th double of the season, and Ryan Novak walked to put runners on first and second base to get the RedHawk offense going in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zarlingo followed this up by singling up the middle to send Baker to home plate. Appelwick reached first after being walked to load the bases, and David Novak singled through the right side to trail by two at 8-6.
  • A solo home run and a sacrifice fly stretched the Demon Deacons' lead to 10-6 in the top of the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Baker smacked his second hit of the day to score a run and trail 10-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Wake Forest recorded its fifth home run of the day to make it a 13-7 ballgame in the top of the sixth inning.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, David Novak and Krupinski were walked to put the score at 13-9.
  • Wake Forest managed to add another run in the top of the eighth inning with a double that put the score at 14-9.
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, Zarlingo doubled, and Appelwick homered to bring the RedHawks within striking distance at 14-11 with no outs. David Novak walked, Krupinski got hit by a pitch and Ty Batusich singled to load the bases. A single to left field by Buzzeo brought the RedHawks within one run at 14-13 before the Demon Deacons found a way to get out of the inning and claim the victory.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:

  • Appelwick tied the single-season Miami record for home runs (21).
  • Baker, Batusich and Buzzeo each had a game-high three hits.
  • David Novak led all RedHawks with 3 RBI.
