In game seven of the Chapel Hill Regional, No. 5 national seed North Carolina's bats came alive early and often to power past Oklahoma, 14-4 and advance to the 12th Super Regional in program history. UNC is now only two wins away from its 13th College World Series appearance.
The Tar Heels (45-13, 18-11 ACC) limited an explosive Oklahoma (38-22, 14-16 SEC) team, which posted 26 runs yesterday in two games, to a mere four on Monday afternoon. The duo of Ryan Lynch and Walker McDuffie on the mound combined for 13 strikeouts in a combined nine innings of work.
A two-out Hunter Stokley double put the Tar Heels on the board in the top of the first, followed right after by an Alex Madera double of his own to knock Stokley in and go ahead 3-0 in the opening frame.
With Lynch on the bump, the Sooners found their way on the board with a two-run shot to right field in the bottom of the second to force an early one run game.
Capitalizing off of Sooner miscues, Carolina tacked on four more runs in the top of the third to strengthen its advantage as four Tar Heels added more RBI to the box score.
Adding his third RBI of the day, Stokley flew out to left for a sacrifice fly to knock Van De Brake in for extra insurance to go ahead 8-2 midway through four.
Firing off a rocket to left field, Van De Brake tallied his seventh home run of the season as Carolina posted 10 runs on the board for the second time in the regional. Only two at bats later, Gallaher joined in on the party with a solo shot of his own to left field.
Dealing on the mound, McDuffie caused all kinds of problems for Oklahoma at the dish, as the freshman bested his career high with seven strikeouts in four innings of work.
Gallaher refused to let up, adding his second shot of the day with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth with a win in Carolina's sights. With McDuffie remaining poised, Carolina took care of business in the bottom of the ninth to come away with a 14-4 victory over the Sooners.
The Tar Heels welcome Arizona for this weekend's Super Regional from Boshamer Stadium, with dates, times and television designations to be determined and announced by the NCAA.
