(BCSNN) — West Virginia sophomore shortstop Matt Ineich has been named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation announced Wednesday. He is one of 100 Division I shortstops recognized for the honor, which is named after former Texas Tech standout Brooks Wallace, who played from 1977–80 before passing away from leukemia at age 27.

In 10 games this season, Ineich is batting .450 with 10 RBI, 15 runs scored, five doubles and a triple, contributing to a 1.174 OPS. Defensively, he has committed just one error in 40 chances.

This marks the seventh time a Mountaineer has appeared on the Brooks Wallace Award watch list and the fourth consecutive year WVU has been represented. Recent honorees include Tevin Tucker (2023) and Brodie Kresser (2024, 2025), along with past selections Jedd Gyorko (2009, 2010) and Jimmy Galusky (2017).

Award co-chair Larry Wallace said the committee is focused on identifying players who reflect both the skill and character associated with Wallace’s legacy. “We will dig deep to find the personal qualities as well as the physical attributes that best exemplify what we look for,” Wallace said.

West Virginia returns to action tonight at Marshall, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
