(BCSNN) — Texas Tech shook off an early 3–0 deficit and dominated the final six innings Tuesday afternoon, scoring 10 runs to defeat New Mexico 10–5 at Lobo Baseball Field. The win moved the Red Raiders to 19–13 and marked just their second victory in Albuquerque since 2019.
Tech swept the season series from the Lobos (19–12‑1) for the first time since 2018 and has now won three straight midweek games, including two against UNM. The Red Raiders previously run‑ruled the Lobos 12–2 on March 24.
After being no‑hit through three innings, Texas Tech broke through in the fourth with a leadoff walk and a single from Gavin Hughes, eventually scoring its first run on a wild pitch. Starter Kaysen Raineri, who allowed three runs in the first two innings (one unearned), settled in to retire the final six batters he faced. He earned his third win of the season with four innings of three‑run ball, striking out four without issuing a walk.
Trailing 3–1, the Red Raiders opened the fifth with a wind‑aided double from Tracer Lopez and a walk to Robin Villeneuve. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Kyeler Thompson tied the game with a hustle two‑run double. Tech took the lead for good on consecutive RBI groundouts from Caden Ferraro and Connor Shouse.
Shouse later doubled home a run in the ninth after tossing a scoreless eighth inning, giving him RBIs No. 45 and 46 on the season.
Right‑hander Bryce Suiter entered in the fifth and faced a bases‑loaded, one‑out jam. He induced a shallow pop‑up to right field, where Jesse Rusinek made the catch and fired a perfect throw to the plate to cut down a sliding Caleb Herd, ending the inning and preserving a 4–3 lead.
Relievers Logan Addison and Jonny Lowe each delivered scoreless innings to carry the advantage into the eighth.
Crooked Numbers Seal It
Texas Tech broke the game open with three runs in the eighth, highlighted by an RBI double from Rusinek, a sacrifice fly from Matt Quintanar, and another UNM wild pitch. Shouse’s RBI double and a two‑run single from Linkin Garcia in the ninth extended the lead to 10–3.
New Mexico scored twice in the ninth and loaded the bases, but Rusinek struck out Gene Trujillo on three pitches to end the game.
Texas Tech returns home for a weekend series against No. 17 West Virginia. First pitch Friday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
