University of South Florida baseball added another one to the win column by taking down Miami on the road for its first-ever win in Coral Gables. The Bulls (26-10, 7-6 American) defeated the Hurricanes (27-10, 8-7 ACC) 4-2, despite a hard-fought effort with the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth for Miami.
Two-thirds of the total runs for the game were scored in the first inning, starting with South Florida recording two in the top of the first. Ryan Pruitt led the game off with a single to left field. He later stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Canes' catcher Alonzo Alvarez. Lance Trippel hit an RBI single to score him, and advanced to second when Joey Brenczewski grounded out to shortstop. Jevin Relaford singled to the pitcher on a bunt, and after an errant throw, he would advance to second, all the while Trippel scored. The score would be 2-0, Bulls at the end of the top of the first.
Miami scored its only two runs of the game in the bottom half of the first. Jake Ogden hit a leadoff double to left field and scored on an RBI triple from Alex Sosa. He would score from third when Max Galvin hit an RBI single to center field. The game would be tied at two, ending the first.
In the top half of the third, the Bulls hit their 15th home run of the season, this time from the bat of Joey Brenczewski. It was a solo shot hit to right field, 377 feet. South Florida is now 13-2 in games in which a Bull has hit a home run. The score would be 3-2, in favor of South Florida, ending the third.
Pruitt led off the top of the seventh by being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Trippel to right center. He would score when Jackson Geiger grounded into a double play. The score would be 4-2 Bulls, which would stay for the remainder of the game.
Dominic Pontbriant got the start on the hump for South Florida. He threw 5.2 innings and earned the win to advance his record to 2-0. Ethan Sutton threw the final two innings and earned his eighth save of the season.
