Curtis Jones scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half, and Milan Momcilovic and Dishon Jackson added 16 and 13 points, respectively, to pace No. 7 Iowa State to an 82-56 win over Kansas City Monday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Jones helped spark the Cyclones in all areas, including a slew of assists in the first half to overcome a sluggish start vs. the preseason favorite to conquer the Summit League. Jones, who also had five dimes and five boards, recorded the third 20-point outing of his Cyclone career.
Holding a 21-16 lead late in the first half, ISU got hot offensively and defensively, making it difficult on the Roos, outscoring Kansas City 43-20 over the next 15 minutes of game action. ISU also forced 16 turnovers and held Kansas City to below 36 percent shooting.
Keshon Gilbert added nine points and dished out a game-high 10 assists, his second double-digit assist outing of his Cyclone career, as ISU won its 20th-straight game in Hilton Coliseum.
How It Happened
After spotting Kansas City an early 8-4 lead, Iowa State slowly began putting the clamps down on defense and taking control. Momcilovic gave the Cyclones their first lead at 9-8 on a 3-pointer from the corner with under 14 minutes left in the opening period.
ISU led 21-16 until mounting a 13-2 run to move ahead 34-18 at the 1:34 mark. Momcilovic added his third trey of the opening period in the flurry, as ISU held the Roos to a 1-of-11 stretch from the floor.
KC's Jamar Brown scored a pair of buckets in the final minute to cut the lead to 34-22 at the break.
Momcilovic and Jackson, who were 4-of-5 from the floor, each had nine points in the first stanza.
A quick 13-0 burst by the Cyclones by the first media timeout of the second half gave ISU a comfortable lead at 47-24. Jackson scored four points and Momcilovic buried his fourth trey for a 23-point cushion.
Jones then started to catch fire, tallying 11 points in another Cyclone spurt, including back-to-back treys to pad the lead at 62-33 with 11 minutes remaining.
ISU led by as many as 32 points moments later and never looked back.
