The UNT men's basketball team signed the 2024 Conference USA Freshman of the Year David Terrell Jr..

Terrell Jr. transfers to the Mean Green after playing his first two seasons at UTEP where he saw action in 66 total games and last year started 32 contests for the Miners. The rising junior led UTEP last season in assists with 126 and had a team leading 1.8 assist/turnover ratio. His 126 assists were the fifth most among Conference USA players but the most among CUSA players who were a sophomore or younger.

He was one of just 11 players in the country last year 20 years old or younger to score 250 or more points, have at least 125 assists, 100 rebounds and 50 or more steals during the season.

"We're all really excited to welcome David Terrell to the Mean Green family," said UNT head coach Daniyal Robinson. "DT comes to Denton very familiar with The Super Pit as his older sister Deja was a member of our women's basketball team. On the court he is an explosive guard that can get in the paint and make plays for himself and his teammates. He is a tenacious defender on the ball and can guard multiple positions. DT is a high character young man that comes from a basketball family. He's a leader, a selfless teammate, and has been well coached. While at UTEP he was named Conference USA Freshmen of the Year. Coming home and playing in front of family was huge for DT. Look for him to make an immediate impact on our program."

Terrell Jr., who has scored nearly 500 points in his career and averages nearly three assists per game, improved on almost every major individual statistical category from his freshman to sophomore season.

He was named the 2024 CUSA Freshman of the Year while helping lead UTEP to the conference tournament championship game. His 44 total steals that season ranked 18th in the nation among all freshmen. UTEP as a team led the nation that year in steals per game and turnovers forced per game.

In his two-year collegiate career, Terrell Jr. has scored in double figures 18 times. He scored a single game career high 17 points in a rivalry game against New Mexico State this past January. Nine of his so far top 10 scoring games have been against conference opponents.

He recorded his first career double-double this past season as he had 15 points and 11 rebounds in a game against Middle Tennessee.

Terrell Jr. is a 2023 graduate from nearby Mansfield Summit High School. He was ranked as the state's 24th best prospect by 247Sports in 2023. He earned 2023 TABC All-State honors after leading his prep team to its first ever appearance to the semifinal round of the state tournament. As a junior he was named the district's defensive player of the year.

Terrell Jr. is the younger brother to Deja Terrell who was on the UNT women's basketball team from 2017-19. His mother Kianna Taylor played collegiately at UTEP and graduated as both the program's second all-time leading scorer (1,134) and rebounder (676). His father David Terrell Sr. played football at UTEP and was drafted into the NFL where he played for Washington and Oakland between 1998-2004.

Terrell Jr. will have two years of eligibility remaining.
