App State Men's Basketball head coach Dustin Kerns announced today the renewal of an in-state series between the Mountaineers and East Carolina Pirates, who will face off for each of the next four seasons.

The series will begin in the 2025-26 season with a Dec. 11 matchup at Minges Coliseum in Greenville. The two teams will alternate home sites each year through the 2028-29 season, meaning the 2026-27 and 2028-29 matchups will be played at the Holmes Center in Boone.

App State and ECU are former conference rivals, with both being members of the Southern Conference from 1972-1977. They have played 64 previous times, last squaring off in the 2019-20 season in Boone, where the Mountaineers posted a 68-62 victory. ECU leads the all-time series, which started in the 1934 season, 36-28. Kerns is 1-0 in his coaching career against the Pirates.

App State has played ECU in Greenville 31 times since the series began, but only three of those contests have come since 2000.

ECU's visit to the Holmes Center in the 2026-27 season will be just the third time since the Holmes Center opened that the Pirates will play the Mountaineers in Boone. Overall, the Mountaineers own a 21-7 record at home against ECU.

App State's addition of ECU to the 2025-26 schedule marks the second AAC opponent that the Mountaineers will square off with in nonconference play this season. The Mountaineers and Charlotte 49ers begin a four-game series on Nov. 21 at the Holmes Center.
