(BCSNN) — Bud Walton Arena was rockin’ Monday night as the No. 14/15 Arkansas Razorbacks opened the season with a barnburner, thumping Southern 109–77 in front of a fired-up home crowd.
Junior forward Trevon Brazile put on a show, notching his 11th career double-double with a career-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. He was near-perfect from the stripe, hitting 8-of-10 free throws and leading a Razorback squad that went 25-of-29 from the line — good for 94.4%, the eighth-best mark in program history.
But it wasn’t just the vets doing damage. Freshmen Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas came out swingin’, combining for 43 points in their Razorback debuts. Acuff dropped 22 — 20 of ’em in the first half — while Thomas poured in 21, tied for the team lead with seven assists, and swiped three steals. Isaiah Sealy added 12 points and didn’t miss a single free throw.
The 109 points tied the most scored under head coach John Calipari and marked the fifth-highest total in a season opener in school history. Arkansas never trailed, led by as many as 32, and shot the lights out while forcing Southern into 15 turnovers.
Thomas became the first Hog ever to post at least 18 points, six assists, and three steals in a debut, and Acuff and Thomas now rank second and third all-time for most points scored by a Razorback freshman in their first game.
Southern got 22 points from Michael Jacobs and 15 from Fazi Oshodi, but the night belonged to the Hogs.
Next up, Arkansas hits the road for a top-25 showdown with No. 22/21 Michigan State on Saturday. Tipoff’s set for 6 p.m. CT on FOX.
