(BCSNN) — Sophomore Isaiah Evans scored a career-high 23 points and freshman Cameron Boozer posted a double-double in his collegiate debut to lead No. 6 Duke to a 75–60 win over Texas in the Dick Vitale Invitational on Monday night at Spectrum Center.
The victory marked Duke’s 26th consecutive win in a season opener.
Evans hit four three-pointers in the first half and added four free throws and a layup in the second to eclipse the 20-point mark for the first time in his career. Boozer finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds, sealing his double-double with a three-point play late in the second half.
Duke (1–0) overcame a slow start, missing its first five shots and trailing 2–0 before Dame Sarr gave the Blue Devils their first lead with a corner three-pointer at the 16:31 mark. Evans sparked a 12–2 run midway through the first half, and Duke led 32–31 before a late Texas floater gave the Longhorns a 33–32 edge at halftime.
The Blue Devils opened the second half with 10 unanswered points, including a two-handed slam from Boozer, to retake the lead. Cayden Boozer’s free throws pushed the margin to double digits, and Duke maintained control the rest of the way.
Texas (0–1) cut the lead to five with 10 minutes remaining, but Caleb Foster ended the run with a pull-up jumper and Evans responded with four quick points to push the lead back to 11. Duke’s defense held the Longhorns to just 27 second-half points.
Patrick Ngongba II added a first-half dunk, and Seiko Sarr and Foster contributed key buckets down the stretch. Evans punctuated the win with a dunk in the final seconds.
