(BCSNN) — Senior guard Honor Huff scored 23 points and West Virginia used a late push to hold off Campbell 73–65 on Thursday night at Hope Coliseum, improving to 2–0 on the season.
Huff led five Mountaineers in double figures, shooting 5-of-10 from the field, 4-of-9 from three-point range, and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Brenen Lorient, Harlan Obioha, and Treysen Eaglestaff each added 12 points, while freshman DJ Thomas chipped in 10.
Lorient nearly posted a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds, five blocks, and four assists. His one-handed dunk with 1:14 remaining helped seal the win after Campbell had trimmed the lead to four.
West Virginia led by eight at halftime, but Campbell opened the second half with an 11–4 run to cut the deficit to one. Huff responded with a pair of clutch threes late in the game, including a falling-out-of-bounds triple from the corner that pushed the lead back to eight with just over two minutes to play.
Campbell (0–2), which lost earlier in the week at No. 24 Wisconsin, stayed in the game by converting 25-of-32 free throws despite shooting just 35.2% from the field and 14.3% from beyond the arc. Dovydas Butka led the Camels with 14 points, while Chris Fields Jr. grabbed 15 rebounds as Campbell out-rebounded WVU 40–36.
“We defended well, but we fouled too much,” head coach Ross Hodge said. “They drive the ball with physicality, and we needed to play just a little bit better without the fouls.”
The Mountaineers shot 74.1% from the free throw line (20-of-27), a marked improvement from their previous outing against Mount St. Mary’s.
Up next: West Virginia hosts Lehigh on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET at Hope Coliseum. The Leopards are 1–1 after a loss to No. 2 Houston and a win over Valley Forge.
