(BSCNN) — The Mountaineers didn't leave any doubt that the Backyard Brawl belonged to West Virginia.

WVU used stifling defense and a balanced offensive attack to roll past rival Pitt 71-49 Wednesday night at Hope Coliseum, improving to 4-0 for the first time since 2023. Senior center Harlan Obioha led the way with a season-high 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting, while senior guard Honor Huff added 15 points and three triples.

The Mountaineers held Pitt to just 25% shooting from three and 37.7% overall, forcing 12 turnovers that led to 21 points. A crowd of 12,453 roared as WVU turned a 21-14 deficit into a 46-25 lead, fueled by an 18-2 run that spanned both halves and included key buckets from Huff, freshman DJ Thomas, and guard Jasper Floyd.

Floyd finished with 13 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Thomas scored all 10 of his points in the first half, while Brenen Lorient added timely second-half baskets to help fend off a brief Pitt rally.

West Virginia outscored Pitt 32-20 in the paint and converted 32 of its 64 possessions into points. The Mountaineers also held a 34-31 edge on the glass and went 21-of-26 from the free-throw line, aided by Pitt’s technical fouls and WVU’s aggressive interior play.

Pitt (3-1) was led by Cameron Corhen with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Omari Witherspoon added 11, while leading scorer Brandin Cummings was held to just seven points on 3-of-13 shooting.

The win gives West Virginia a 102-90 edge in the all-time series and continues the trend of double-digit margins in Backyard Brawl victories since the rivalry resumed annually in 2017.

Looking ahead, WVU will wrap up its five-game homestand Monday, Nov. 17 against Lafayette on ESPN+. Senior Chance Moore will be eligible to return, and forward Jackson Fields is nearing full recovery from a preseason hand injury. Things are looking up in MoTown.
