(BCSNN) — Virginia Tech held off a physical Charlotte squad to remain unbeaten, defeating the 49ers 84–76 Sunday night at Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies led for 39 minutes and moved to 4–0 on the season behind standout performances from Jailen Bedford and Tobi Lawal.
Bedford kept the Hokies afloat during a sluggish first half, scoring 16 of his season-high 21 points before the break. He shot 4-of-8 from three and attacked the paint with his signature scoop layups. In the second half, Lawal took over — posting 18 points, a career-high 15 rebounds, and anchoring the defense against Charlotte’s twin seven-footers.
Jaden Schutt added 12 points, knocking down four three-pointers for the second straight game. Amani Hansberry opened the scoring with a triple and helped limit Charlotte’s frontcourt duo to 27 combined points. Antonio Dorn also contributed defensively, helping force early foul trouble.
Virginia Tech’s starting five — Avdalas, Bedford, Lawal, Johnson, and Hansberry — remained intact for the fourth straight game. Avdalas drew fouls and hit all six of his free throws, while Tyler Johnson grabbed a season-high eight rebounds and posted a +20 plus/minus.
The Hokies will close out their home stretch Wednesday, Nov. 19 against Bryant at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra.
