(BCSNN) – No. 15 Texas Tech closed its non‑conference slate with a statement. The Red Raiders overwhelmed Winthrop 87-57 on Sunday at United Supermarkets Arena, extending their non‑conference home winning streak to 46 games and improving to 10-3 heading into Big 12 play.
Texas Tech (10-3) opened the game on a 7-0 run, then detonated a 24-0 burst to build a 35-4 lead — a stretch of dominance that effectively ended the contest before halftime. It marked the Red Raiders’ third win this season by 30 points or more and pushed their home record to a perfect 7-0.
Christian Anderson delivered another star‑level performance, scoring 29 points with six rebounds and five assists. Jaylen Petty added a career‑high 20 points on 6‑for‑8 shooting in his first career start. JT Toppin recorded his seventh double‑double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Donovan Atwell chipped in 14 points and four 3‑pointers.
Texas Tech finished 10‑for‑26 from deep, with Anderson and Atwell each hitting four threes.
Winthrop (8-7) entered the game averaging 90.3 points per contest while shooting 47 percent from the field and 37 percent from three. Against Texas Tech’s swarming defense, the Eagles shot just 31.7 percent overall and 4‑for‑25 (16 percent) from beyond the arc while committing 15 turnovers.
"We probably played some of the best basketball we have all season in the first 20 minutes," said Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland. "We were competitive, shared the ball and made the right plays. We've got a lot to grow from but it was the most deflections and stops we've had in a game. Playing against a great offensive team like Winthrop and to separate like we did was tremendous. We're excited for conference play."
Texas Tech led 59-21 at halftime after shooting 65.6 percent from the field and 60 percent from three. Anderson poured in 25 first‑half points, including a pair of threes to push the lead to 57-21 before beating the buzzer with a runner in the lane. Toppin nearly had a double‑double by the break with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Petty added eight points and three rebounds in the opening half, while Atwell hit three threes to help fuel the 24‑0 run that blew the game open.
Anderson now averages 20.6 points and 7.1 assists after scoring 27 against Duke last weekend. Petty’s 20‑point outing surpassed his previous career high of 14, and the Red Raiders finished 23‑for‑26 at the free‑throw line.
Texas Tech also dominated the glass, holding a 22-12 rebounding edge at halftime and controlling the interior throughout.
The Red Raiders now turn their attention to Big 12 play, opening conference action at home against Oklahoma State on Jan. 3.
