(BCSNN) — No. 1 Arizona continues to look every bit like the nation’s top team. Behind five players in double figures and another overpowering effort on the glass, the Wildcats cruised past Utah 97–78 on Saturday to remain undefeated and extend their best start in more than a decade.
Tobe Awaka and Jaden Bradley each scored 18 points, while Awaka added 12 rebounds for his third double‑double of the season and the 14th of his career. Arizona (14–0, 1–0 Big 12) dominated the boards 43–30, flexing the rebounding advantage that has made them one of the nation’s most physically imposing teams.
Freshman Brayden Burries delivered his first career double‑double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Koa Peat added 17, and Ivan Kharchenkov chipped in 13 as the Wildcats extended their best start since opening the 2013–14 season 21–0.
Utah (8–6, 0–1) was led by Terrence Brown’s 26 points, while Don McHenry and Keanu Dawes each scored 15.
Arizona wasted no time asserting control, jumping out to a 27–10 lead behind Awaka’s early burst - a 3‑pointer and four offensive rebounds - and five Utah turnovers. The Utes briefly trimmed the deficit to 36–28 on a Dawes dunk, but the Wildcats responded with a 10–0 run and closed the half with a season‑best 58 points.
Arizona shot 7‑for‑18 from three and held Utah to just five made threes. The Wildcats’ streak of winning by 20‑plus points ended at eight games, but the Utes never got closer than 73–58 in the second half.
The game marked the ninth straight outing in which Arizona had at least five players score in double figures - a testament to the depth and balance that has kept the Wildcats atop the AP Top 25 for four consecutive weeks. They entered the day as one of just six undefeated teams remaining in Division I.
Arizona returns home to host Kansas State on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. MST on FS1.
