(BCSNN) – Freshman Koa Peat delivered a dominant performance with 24 points and 10 rebounds, powering Arizona to an 89-82 win over rival Arizona State on Tuesday night at McKale Center. The Wildcats surged in the second half, outscoring the Sun Devils 51-43 after halftime and shooting a blistering 66.7% over the final 20 minutes.
Fellow freshman Ivan Kharchenkov added 15 points and four rebounds, while Jaden Bradley contributed 12 points and four assists. Arizona shot 54.2% from the field overall and sealed the game at the free‑throw line, going 21 of 26.
Off the bench, Tobe Awaka delivered a career night with 25 points on 8‑of‑11 shooting, giving the Wildcats a crucial spark. Arizona capitalized on 13 Arizona State turnovers for 13 points and held a 17-7 advantage in fast‑break scoring.
Arizona State was led by Maurice Odum, who scored 23 points and hit four three‑pointers. Massamba Diop added 16 points as the Sun Devils shot 44.0% from deep.
The Sun Devils briefly led by three early — their largest lead of the night — and took a 39-38 halftime advantage. But Arizona seized control midway through the second half, making 11 straight field goals during a 10‑minute stretch and building a lead as large as 12.
The rivalry matchup featured 16 lead changes and nine ties, with Arizona State trimming the deficit to one possession late. Arizona responded with timely buckets and clutch free throws to close out the win.
The Wildcats dominated the interior, finishing with a 39-28 rebounding edge and 46 points in the paint, helping them withstand Arizona State’s perimeter shooting.
