(BCSNN) — Freshman guard Kingston Flemings scored 19 points, including 11 in the second half, to help No. 8 Houston secure a 77–66 road win over No. 16 BYU on Saturday night at the Marriott Center. The Cougars (21–2, 9–1 Big 12) extended their winning streak to four games and remained within a game of No. 1 Arizona in the conference standings.
Freshman forward Chris Cenac Jr. added 16 points, and senior guard Emanuel Sharp scored 14 as Houston shot 50 percent after halftime. Flemings led or tied for the team lead in scoring for the 14th time this season and recorded his 12th straight game with at least five assists.
BYU (17–6, 5–5) was led by AJ Dybantsa’s 28 points and Rob Wright III’s 17, but the Cougars dropped their fourth consecutive game. BYU reached the bonus early in the second half but shot just 16‑for‑28 from the free‑throw line.
Houston used a 14–5 run late in the second half, powered by four Flemings baskets and multiple second‑chance scores, to build a 68–59 lead with just over three minutes remaining. Sharp’s three‑pointer and two free throws in the final minutes sealed the win after BYU cut the deficit to five.
Houston built a double‑digit lead in the first half behind efficient offense and strong interior defense. After BYU pulled within one on back‑to‑back threes from Richie Saunders and Wright, Houston responded with a 9–0 run capped by two Flemings baskets. Dybantsa fueled a late BYU push to trim the margin before halftime.
BYU opened the second half with a 14–4 run to take a 51–48 lead, but Flemings scored nine of Houston’s next 11 points to regain control. The visiting Cougars held BYU without a field goal for key stretches down the stretch.
