(BCSNN) — Four players scored in double figures and No. 13 Michigan State used a late surge to build an eight‑point lead before holding off No. 8 Purdue 76–74 on Thursday night at Mackey Arena, snapping a seven‑game road losing streak to the Boilermakers.
The win was Michigan State’s first at Purdue since Feb. 20, 2014.
Senior center Carson Cooper led the Spartans with 15 points and six rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard Jeremy Fears Jr. added 12 points and six assists, sophomore guard Kur Teng scored 13 points with three rebounds, and junior forward Coen Carr finished with 11 points and five boards.
Michigan State improved to 23–5 overall and 13–4 in the Big Ten. Purdue fell to 22–6 and 12–6 in conference play.
The game featured 12 lead changes and seven ties, including five lead changes and four ties in the second half. Michigan State took the lead for good with 11:12 remaining on two free throws from Cooper to go up 57–56. Teng followed with a three‑pointer, and Carr added a fast‑break dunk to stretch the margin to 62–56.
After Purdue pulled within 64–61, the Spartans answered with an 8–3 run capped by a driving layup from Fears with 4:11 left to make it 72–64. Jordan Scott’s jumper with 3:11 remaining pushed the lead to 74–67, but Purdue’s Braden Smith hit a three to cut it to 74–72. Jaxon Kohler answered with a turnaround jumper at 1:55, and Purdue’s Jack Benter scored with 1:35 left to make it 76–74.
Both teams missed shots in the final minute, and after a missed free throw from Cam Ward with eight seconds left, Michigan State survived a last‑second Purdue three‑point attempt.
Michigan State trailed 39–36 at halftime after a back‑and‑forth opening 20 minutes that included three ties and seven lead changes. The Spartans used a 10–0 run early in the half, sparked by a four‑point play from Fears, and later tied the game at 31 and 34 before Purdue took a three‑point lead into the break.
