(BCSNN) -- Cale Jacobsen scored six of his career‑high 15 points in overtime as No. 9 Nebraska closed the game on a 9–0 run to defeat Iowa 84–75 on Sunday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The win moved the Huskers to 26–5 and tied the program’s single‑season record for victories.
Jacobsen, who also posted a career‑best eight rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench, broke a 75–75 tie with 1:30 left in overtime. Nebraska then took full control, getting four straight points from Sam Hoiberg before Jamarques Lawrence sealed the run with a steal and layup. The Huskers held Iowa to 1‑for‑6 shooting in the extra period after the Hawkeyes erased an 11‑point second‑half deficit to force overtime.
Jacobsen, Hoiberg and Pryce Sandfort each scored 15 points, while Rienk Mast added 14. Nebraska shot 50 percent from the field, hit 10 three‑pointers and became just the third team this season to exceed its scoring average against an Iowa defense that entered leading the Big Ten at 65.2 points allowed per game. The Husker seniors finished the year 16–2 at home.
Iowa (20–11, 10–10 Big Ten) was led by Cooper Koch and Kael Combs with 18 points apiece. The Hawkeyes forced overtime when Combs hit a three with 2.7 seconds left after an offensive rebound.
Nebraska led 30–26 at halftime after neither team created separation in the opening 20 minutes. The Huskers opened the second half with a trio of threes from Sandfort and Mast to build a 40–30 lead. Nebraska maintained control until Iowa surged late, shooting 61 percent after halftime to stay within striking distance.
The Huskers led 68–62 with under two minutes left after a Jacobsen steal and layup, but missed free throws allowed Iowa to rally. Sandfort’s free throws made it 70–67 with 13.7 seconds left before Combs forced overtime.
With the win, Nebraska secured the No. 2 seed in next week’s Big Ten Tournament and will open play in Friday’s quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m.
