(BCSNN) — The University of North Carolina announced Tuesday that Hubert Davis will not return as head coach of the Tar Heels, ending his five‑year tenure leading the program he once starred for as a player.

The decision was recommended by director of athletics Bubba Cunningham and executive associate athletic director Steve Newmark — who will assume the AD role on July 1 — and accepted by chancellor Lee H. Roberts.

“We appreciate all that Hubert has done for Carolina as a player, assistant coach, head coach and community leader — he has helped make special memories we will never forget,” Cunningham said. “This was not an easy decision because of Hubert’s tremendous character and all he has given to the program, but we must move forward in a way that allows our team to compete more consistently at an elite level.”

Newmark echoed the sentiment, noting Davis’ deep connection to the university and the impact he had on his players. “Hubert cares deeply for our university, and it has been inspiring to watch him instill that love and Tar Heel tradition into the players he has coached,” he said.

UNC will honor the terms of Davis’ contract.

A national search for the next head coach is underway. Cunningham and Newmark will lead the process, with assistance from executive search firm Turnkey ZRG. They will also consult an advisory group of former players, former coaches and key supporters of the program.

Davis played for the Tar Heels from 1988–92 before a 12‑year NBA career. He returned to Chapel Hill in 2012 as an assistant under Roy Williams, helping UNC win the 2017 national championship. He was named head coach in April 2021 following Williams’ retirement.
