(BCSNN) — Michigan delivered one of its most complete performances of the season on the sport’s biggest stage, overpowering top‑seeded Arizona 91–71 in the Final Four on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Wolverines reached the 90‑point mark for the third time this postseason and advanced to their eighth national championship game.
Michigan (36–3) shot 57.1 percent from the field — including a blistering 63.6 percent in the second half — and led by 16 at halftime, never allowing Arizona (36–3) to seriously threaten after the break.
Aday Mara anchored the effort with 26 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks, marking his third 20‑point game of the season. Trey McKenney added 16 points on four made threes, while Elliot Cadeau recorded his third double‑double of the year with 13 points, 10 assists and four steals. Yaxel Lendeborg contributed 11 points on a perfect 3‑for‑3 from deep, and Morez Johnson Jr. added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Arizona used a 9‑0 run midway through the first half to cut Michigan’s lead to single digits, but Roddy Gayle Jr. halted the surge with a dunk at the 6:22 mark. The play sparked a 7‑0 Michigan run, restoring a multi‑possession lead. Mara then scored seven straight points from 2:36 to 1:47, pushing the margin to 45–27 and giving the Wolverines full control.
Michigan opened with an 8‑0 run, fueled by Mara and Johnson, and built a 16–5 lead behind early baskets from Mara and a McKenney slam. Cadeau and Lendeborg connected from deep to extend the margin to 22–10.
Arizona responded with an 11–2 run, but Michigan countered with timely scoring. Gayle’s dunk ended a nine‑point Arizona stretch, and McKenney’s three re‑established a double‑digit lead. Mara closed the half with seven straight points, and Johnson’s putback dunk sent Michigan into the break ahead 48–32.
Mara opened the second half with another basket, and Lendeborg returned from a first‑half injury to hit back‑to‑back threes. McKenney followed with two more triples, stretching the lead to 59–39.
Michigan then produced one of its most efficient stretches of the season, making 11 of 13 shots from Lendeborg’s second three until the 8:38 mark. The Wolverines led 81–55 at the end of the run and maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way.
Arizona never cut the deficit below 17 in the final minutes.
