(BCSNN) — Iowa State sophomore Killyan Toure underwent successful surgery at the start of the weekend to repair a right shoulder injury and is expected to return to play in January, the school announced.

Toure suffered the injury while serving as one of the top 15 college counselors at Damian Lillard’s Formula Zero Elite Camp, shortly after completing a strong summer session in Ames.

“This is an unfortunate setback for Killyan,” coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “He has been an important part of our program and we’re looking forward to having him back for the second half of the season. Right now, our focus is on his health and recovery.”

Toure started all 37 games last season, tying the school record for freshman starts and emerging as one of the most versatile first‑year players in the country. He averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals, becoming one of just 11 freshmen nationally to hit those benchmarks.

He was the 26th freshman in program history to start a season opener and the fourth under Otzelberger. His 54 steals ranked fifth among Iowa State freshmen all‑time.

Toure’s breakout came in Las Vegas at the Players Era Championship, where he scored 20 points against Creighton. He followed with a historic NCAA Tournament debut, posting 25 points, 11 rebounds and six assists against Tennessee State — becoming the first freshman in NCAA Tournament history to record those numbers in a game.

Iowa State went 16–1 when Toure scored in double figures, 21–2 when he recorded multiple assists and 14–3 when he tallied multiple steals, underscoring his impact on the Cyclones’ success.

With Toure sidelined until January, Iowa State will open the season without one of its most dynamic two‑way players — but with optimism he will return in time to influence the stretch run.
