After leading Boise State to its first College Football Playoff appearance and back-to-back Mountain West championships, head coach Spencer Danielson has signed a contract extension through the 2029 season, Boise State Athletics announced.
The contract is subject to final approval by the Idaho State Board of Education.
Danielson, 36, completed his first full season leading the Broncos in 2024 and took the program to the top-10 in national rankings, earned the program's first back-to-back Mountain West titles, and grabbed the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff as one of the highest ranked conference champions. The Broncos turned in a 12-win season, which matched their most wins in a single-season over the last 10 years.
"Spencer has proven to be the right leader at the right time for Boise State football and our university as a whole," said Jeramiah Dickey, Boise State Director of Athletics. "We ask all of our staff to be bar raisers, and Spencer is a perfect example of what it means for Boise State and this community. I am proud to see him not only develop champions on the field, proven by this past year's trip to the College Football Playoff, but also champions in life. We are grateful for him and his family believing in this place, and we are excited for What's Next!"
"First, thank you to Jeramiah Dickey and the entire Boise State University leadership team for trusting me, our coaching staff, and our student-athletes to represent this great university and community each and every day," said Danielson. "I truly believe it's my calling to be the head coach at Boise State. My family and I want to be here and serve Bronco Nation through our football program - not only with wins and championships, but as we help develop young men for the next stages of their lives. We are fired up for the future of Boise State football!"
The 2024 season saw Boise State ranked in the top-10 in the nation in several offensive categories, including fifth in scoring (37.3 ppg) and eighth in total offense (466.0 ypg). The Broncos led the nation with 55 sacks and ranked fifth in tackles for loss per game (7.9). Ashton Jeanty became the program's first Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award winner while finishing as the Heisman Trophy runner-up.
In addition to the team success, Danielson earned his own accolades as he was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year, a finalist for the Eddie Robinson and Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year national honors, and the FCA Grant Teaff Coach of the Year. In the classroom, the Broncos also had a team-record GPA in the Fall 2024 semester.
Danielson completed his eighth season as a member of the Boise State coaching staff in 2024 as he has risen from graduate assistant to defensive coordinator to interim head coach to head coach over his time in the Treasure Valley. He was named the interim head coach to close out the 2023 season and took the Broncos to the Mountain West Championship Game, where they captured the title on the road, and advanced to the LA Bowl.
As a head coach, Danielson has a 15-3 career record to go with his two conference titles.
The Broncos open the 2025 season at South Florida on Thursday, August 28. The home opener is scheduled for Saturday, September 6 against Eastern Washington.
Kickoff times and TV selections for the 2025 campaign will be announced later this spring.
