GREENVILLE, Miss. (BCSNN) — Baylor defensive lineman Alex Foster died early Wednesday morning after being shot multiple times in his hometown of Greenville, Mississippi, authorities confirmed.

The 18-year-old redshirt freshman was found inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds, according to the Washington County Coroner’s Office. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The Greenville Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 12:11 a.m. Wednesday. Officers discovered Foster as the sole victim inside the vehicle. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not disclosed any potential suspects or motives behind the shooting.

Foster, a three-star recruit from St. Joseph High School in Madison, Mississippi, signed with Baylor in February 2024. He redshirted his freshman season and participated in spring practices earlier this year. The 6-foot-5, 292-pound defensive lineman was ranked among Mississippi’s top-20 prospects and was expected to compete for playing time in the upcoming season.

Baylor head coach Dave Aranda and athletic director Mack Rhoades released a joint statement expressing their grief over Foster’s passing. “We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster, a beloved member of our football family,” the statement read. “Our immediate focus is on supporting Alex’s family and his teammates through this devastating loss. Alex’s memory will forever be part of our hearts and this program”.

The tragedy has deeply affected Foster’s family, friends, and the Baylor community. His former high school coach, John Baker, described him as a “quiet, soft-spoken guy” who had his “head on right and was wanting to make it out.” Baker noted that Foster had returned home for summer break and was scheduled to return to Baylor later this week.

As Baylor mourns Foster’s loss, the program and university community are rallying around his family. The investigation into his death continues as authorities seek answers in the wake of the tragedy.
