(BCSNN) -- Ohio State and Navy will kick off the 2029 college football season against each other, marking the first meeting between the programs in 15 years. The Buckeyes will host the Midshipmen at Ohio Stadium on Sept. 1, 2029, in what will be the sixth all-time matchup between the two teams.

Ohio State has dominated the series, winning all five previous meetings dating back to 1930. The most recent contest came in 2014, when the Buckeyes defeated Navy 34-17 in Baltimore. That game was closer than the final score indicated, as Navy trailed just 20-17 in the fourth quarter before Ezekiel Elliott’s 10-yard touchdown run and a late scoring pass from J.T. Barrett to Michael Thomas sealed the victory.

The 2014 season proved to be a historic one for Ohio State, as the Buckeyes went on to win the inaugural College Football Playoff, defeating Oregon 42-20 in the national championship game. Navy, meanwhile, finished that season with an 8-5 record, capped by a win over San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl.

To accommodate the addition of Navy to the 2029 schedule, Ohio State had to make several adjustments to its future nonconference slate. The Buckeyes were originally scheduled to play Nevada on Sept. 1, 2029, but that game has been moved to Sept. 7, 2030. Additionally, Ohio State added a matchup with Youngstown State, which will take place on Sept. 15, 2029, at Ohio Stadium.

With these changes, Ohio State’s nonconference schedule for 2029 is now set, featuring Navy, Charlotte (Sept. 8), and Youngstown State. The Buckeyes still have one open date remaining in 2030, as they have yet to schedule an opponent for their season opener on Aug. 31. Their other nonconference games that year will be against Nevada and Georgia, with the latter being played in Athens.

For Navy, the 2029 matchup against Ohio State represents an opportunity to face one of college football’s traditional powerhouses. The Midshipmen, known for their triple-option offense, have historically challenged major programs with their disciplined play and unique offensive schemes. While they have yet to defeat Ohio State, they have given the Buckeyes competitive games, including a narrow 31-27 loss in 2009.

The announcement of the 2029 season opener continues Ohio State’s trend of scheduling service academies in recent years. The Buckeyes last faced Army in 2017, winning 38-7, and have historically played Air Force as well. These matchups often provide a unique test for Ohio State’s defense, which must prepare for the unconventional offensive styles employed by service academy teams.

With the 2029 season still four years away, both programs will undergo significant changes before they meet on the field. However, the early scheduling of this matchup ensures that fans can look forward to a compelling season opener between two programs with distinct football traditions. For Ohio State, it will be another opportunity to start a season with a statement win, while Navy will aim to pull off a historic upset.
