(BCSNN) — Iowa State head football coach Matt Campbell has signed a contract extension that will keep him in Ames through the 2032 season, the university announced Friday. The deal comes on the heels of the most successful campaign in program history, with the Cyclones finishing 11–3 and earning a No. 15 ranking in the final AP Top 25.

Campbell, 45, will earn $5 million annually in total compensation under the new agreement, a modest increase from the $4 million he made last season. Notably, Campbell accepted a discount on the deal to allow for a larger assistant coaching salary pool and an additional $1 million in revenue-sharing funds for the football roster. The contract includes performance incentives that could push his earnings higher, including bonuses for win totals, Big 12 titles, and postseason success.

Since arriving at Iowa State in 2016, Campbell has compiled a 64–51 record, becoming the winningest coach in program history. He has led the Cyclones to seven bowl appearances in nine seasons, including a Fiesta Bowl victory in 2020 and last year’s Pop-Tarts Bowl win over Miami. Iowa State had never recorded a 10-win season before Campbell’s tenure, and the 2024 campaign marked the first time the program reached 11 victories.

The extension also reflects Campbell’s commitment to continuity and development. The contract permits him to distribute up to $100,000 of his performance bonuses annually to his staff. Athletic director Jamie Pollard praised Campbell’s leadership, saying, “Matt is the perfect fit for Iowa State University, and I am thrilled he wants to continue to lead our program. Leadership continuity is essential to any organization’s long-term success”.

Campbell’s name has frequently surfaced in coaching searches, including reported interest from the NFL’s Chicago Bears earlier this year. However, he has consistently chosen to remain at Iowa State, citing the university’s values and the opportunity to build a sustainable program. “It is an honor to be associated with a great university and community,” Campbell said. “We’re not just chasing wins—we’re building something meaningful”.

The Cyclones open the 2025 season on Aug. 23 against Kansas State in Dublin, Ireland. With quarterback Rocco Becht returning and a deep defensive unit, expectations are high for another run at the Big 12 title—and possibly a College Football Playoff berth.
