Kansas State has long been known for its physical, ground-and-pound style of football, which has producied some of the most productive and versatile running backs in the Big 12 and beyond.
From record-setting college careers to NFL success, these backs have left a lasting legacy in Manhattan and football, in general. This list ranks the top five Kansas State running backs based on their time with the Wildcats and the legacies they built after leaving the program.
No. 5 | Alex Barnes | 2015–2018
Barnes led the Big 12 in rushing in 2018 with 1,355 yards and 12 touchdowns, capping off a career that included 2,616 rushing yards and 25 scores. Known for his bruising style and durability, Barnes declared early for the NFL Draft and signed with the Tennessee Titans. Though his pro career was brief, his impact in Manhattan was undeniable.
No. 4 | John Hubert | 2010–2013
Hubert ranks second all-time in rushing yards at Kansas State with 2,993 and added 28 touchdowns over his career. A steady and reliable presence in the backfield, Hubert was a key contributor during the Collin Klein era, helping the Wildcats reach the Fiesta Bowl in 2012. Though he didn’t have a lengthy NFL career, his consistency and leadership made him a fan favorite.
No. 3 | Larry Brown | 1967–1969
Brown didn't have the numbers that some of these other guys achieved, but he was a trailblazer for Kansas State, rushing for 2,283 yards and earning All-Big Eight honors before being drafted by Washington in 1969. He went on to win NFL MVP in 1972, earn four Pro Bowl selections, and rush for over 5,800 yards in his pro career. Brown remains one of the most decorated alumni in Wildcat history.
No. 2 | Deuce Vaughn | 2020–2022
Despite his 5-foot-6 frame, Vaughn carved out one of the most dynamic careers in school history. He rushed for 3,604 yards and 34 touchdowns, while adding over 1,200 receiving yards. Vaughn was a two-time consensus All-American and helped lead K-State to a Big 12 title in 2022. He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and made the roster as a rookie, continuing to defy expectations.
No. 1 | Darren Sproles | 2001–2004
Sproles is the undisputed king of Kansas State running backs. He rushed for a school-record 4,979 yards and 45 touchdowns, including a legendary 323-yard performance against No. 1 Oklahoma in the 2003 Big 12 Championship. His all-purpose yardage and elusiveness made him a nightmare for defenses. Sproles went on to a 15-year NFL career, earning Pro Bowl honors and setting the NFL single-season record for all-purpose yards in 2011.
Honorable Mentions:
- Daniel Thomas (2009–2010)
- James Johnson (2004–2007)
- Rock Cartwright (1998–2001)
- Michael Bishop (1997–1998, dual-threat QB/RB)
From the electrifying runs that saw Sproles make cuts putting him nearly horizontal with the ground, to Vaughn’s all-purpose brilliance, Kansas State’s running back legacy is rich with talent and toughness. These backs not only defined eras in Manhattan but also carried their success to the next level and throughout their lives. As the Wildcats continue to build under Chris Klieman, the next great back may already be waiting in the wings. Maybe we'll see Dylan Edwards on this list soon.
