(BCSNN) — Oklahoma State starting quarterback Hauss Hejny will miss several weeks after sustaining a broken bone in his left foot during the Cowboys’ season-opening win over UT Martin, head coach Mike Gundy confirmed Friday. Hejny exited the game after the third offensive series and underwent surgery later that day.

Hejny, a redshirt freshman and TCU transfer, was making his first career start and led the Cowboys to touchdowns on their opening two drives. He finished 5-of-10 passing for 96 yards and a touchdown, adding 27 rushing yards and a score before leaving the game with what was initially described as a lower-body injury. The foot fracture was later confirmed by team sources and reported by multiple outlets.

The next man was redshirt sophomore Zane Flores, who stepped in and completed 13 of 20 passes for 136 yards in relief. Flores led three scoring drives and will start next week when Oklahoma State travels to No. 7 Oregon.

Flores, a Nebraska native and former Elite 11 finalist, had been competing with Hejny throughout fall camp. Though Hejny’s mobility and familiarity with offensive coordinator Doug Meacham’s system gave him the edge, Flores now takes over a Cowboys offense still finding its rhythm after a 3–9 campaign in 2024.

True freshman Banks Bowen is expected to serve as the backup while Hejny recovers. The timeline for Hejny’s return is estimated at five to six weeks, which could keep him sidelined through the Cowboys’ Big 12 opener against Baylor on Sept. 27.

Hejny’s injury is part of a broader challenge for Oklahoma State, which entered the season with just four returning starters and 41 new transfers. The team will rely heavily on its revamped roster and internal development to stay competitive in a deep Big 12 field.

Oklahoma State (1–0) faces a major test in Week 2 at Autzen Stadium, where Flores will make his first career start, which just happens to be against a top-10 opponent on the road.
