(BCSNN) — Carter Davis drilled a 47-yard field goal with 1:04 remaining to lift No. 10 Miami past No. 6 Notre Dame 27–24 on Sunday night at Hard Rock Stadium, capping a back-and-forth season opener between two College Football Playoff hopefuls. The Hurricanes held off a late Irish rally and sealed the win with back-to-back sacks on quarterback CJ Carr in the final seconds.
Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney led all pass catchers with six receptions for 82 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown grab late in the second quarter that gave the Hurricanes a 14–7 halftime lead. Quarterback Carson Beck, making his debut after transferring from Georgia, threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-27 passing, guiding Miami to scoring drives on three of its final five possessions.
Carr, in his first collegiate start, finished 19-of-30 for 221 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception. He also added a 7-yard rushing score with 3:21 left to tie the game at 24–24, capping a 75-yard drive that showcased his poise and mobility. “He battled all night,” Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said. “We just didn’t finish the way we needed to.”
Miami’s ground game was led by Marty Brown, who rushed for 76 yards on 14 carries and scored on a 5-yard run midway through the third quarter. Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love paced the Irish with 61 rushing yards on 12 attempts, but the team was held to just 2.9 yards per carry overall by a swarming Hurricanes front seven.
The Hurricanes outgained Notre Dame 324–314 and controlled the clock with back-to-back 75-yard touchdown drives that spanned the second and third quarters. CJ Daniels added a highlight-reel 20-yard touchdown catch with 12 seconds left in the first half, and Rueben Bain Jr. recorded a fourth-quarter interception off a deflected pass to stall a Notre Dame comeback attempt.
Notre Dame’s scoring came via touchdown grabs from Micah Gilbert and Jordan Faison, along with a 39-yard field goal from Nathan Burnette. The Irish defense forced one turnover and held Miami to just six points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t stop Beck’s final drive that set up Davis’ game-winning kick.
The loss drops Notre Dame to 0–1 and marks its seventh consecutive road defeat to Miami dating back to 1977. The Irish will look to rebound when they host Texas A&M on Sept. 13 in a high-profile non-conference matchup. Miami (1–0) will host Bethune-Cookman next Saturday before diving into ACC play.
“It’s just an unbelievable night," said Miami head coach Mario Cristobal after the Hurricanes shocked the No. 6 Irish. “Unbelievable night for so many people that poured so much into this.”
