(BCSNN) — UCLA backup quarterback Pierce Clarkson has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities following his arrest on unspecified felony charges, the university confirmed over the weekend. The 21-year-old was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest Division and released later that day after posting $30,000 bail. His first court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 3.

In a statement, the UCLA athletic department said, “We are aware of the charges against Pierce Clarkson. He has been indefinitely suspended from all team activity pending the outcome of the legal process. This situation will be evaluated by the UCLA Office of Student Conduct and any further action taken will be in accordance with that evaluation and University policy”.

Clarkson, the son of renowned quarterback trainer Steve Clarkson, transferred to UCLA in May after brief stints at Louisville and Ole Miss. A former standout at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif., Clarkson played sparingly at Louisville, completing 4-of-6 passes for 18 yards and rushing five times for 9 yards across two seasons. He had not appeared in either of UCLA’s first two games this season and was not present on the sideline during the Bruins’ 30–23 loss to UNLV on Saturday.

The arrest adds to a turbulent start for UCLA, which is 0–2 under head coach DeShaun Foster and searching for answers on both sides of the ball. Starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava has taken every snap through two games, while Clarkson had been competing with Luke Duncan for the No. 2 role. With Clarkson sidelined, Duncan is expected to serve as the primary backup moving forward.

UCLA returns to action Sept. 14 against San Diego State, hoping to avoid its first 0–3 start since 2010. The university has not disclosed the nature of the charges against Clarkson, and further details remain pending as the legal process unfolds.
