(BCSNN) — Iowa senior tight end Addison Ostrenga will miss the remainder of the 2025 season after suffering an Achilles injury in the first quarter of the Hawkeyes’ Week 2 loss to Iowa State, head coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed. Ostrenga underwent surgery on Monday and will begin rehabilitation immediately.
“It’s really unfortunate,” Ferentz said. “Addison’s a great young guy. You hate to have anybody lose playing time, and he’s one of our senior guys, a leader, just a tremendous young person”.
The injury marks another setback for an Iowa offense already struggling to find rhythm. Through two games, the Hawkeyes rank last in the FBS in yards per pass attempt (3.3) and worst among Power Four teams in passing yards per game (65.5). Ostrenga had caught one pass for eight yards before going down, but his absence leaves a void in a position group that has long been a cornerstone of Iowa’s offensive identity.
Ostrenga, a 6-foot-4, 248-pound native of Sun Prairie, Wis., had appeared in 35 games and made 11 starts during his Hawkeye career. He totaled 48 receptions for 320 yards and three touchdowns across four seasons. After missing time last year due to injury, Ostrenga entered 2025 as Iowa’s top tight end, anchoring a unit that has produced seven NFL Draft picks since 2014.
With Ostrenga sidelined, junior Zach Ortwerth steps into the starting role, backed by graduate transfer Hayden Large and redshirt freshman DJ Vonnahme. Ortwerth, who has 13 career receptions for 192 yards, said the group is focused on “getting better at the little things” and embracing the opportunity to contribute.
The loss of Ostrenga adds to Iowa’s growing list of offensive injuries. As the Hawkeyes prepare for their Week 3 matchup against UMass, Ferentz and his staff face the challenge of reshaping a depleted offense while maintaining the program’s trademark physicality.
