(BCSNN) — Tulsa stunned Oklahoma State 19–12 on Friday night at Boone Pickens Stadium, snapping a 23-game losing streak in Stillwater that dated back to 1951. The Golden Hurricane scored on each of their first four possessions and held off a late Cowboys rally to claim the Turnpike Classic in dramatic fashion.
Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Braylin Presley in the first quarter and kicker Seth Morgan added four field goals, including two from 47 yards. Running back Dominic Richardson, a former Cowboy (and Baylor Bear), powered the Tulsa offense with 146 rushing yards on 31 carries, helping the Golden Hurricane control the clock and tempo throughout.
Oklahoma State quarterback Zane Flores made his first home start and finished 25-of-40 for 214 yards. He added 56 rushing yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown that cut the deficit to seven. Running back Rodney Fields Jr. led the Cowboys with 113 yards on 17 carries and caught six passes for 39 yards, but OSU’s offense stalled when the Pokes needed it most.
Mike Gundy's squad had a chance to tie things up late in the fourth quarter, but Flores began to misfire on just about anything that didn't involve handing the ball off directly, ending a promising drive. After Tulsa drained the clock, OSU’s final possession fizzled out well short of a comeback.
Tulsa improved to 2–2 with the win, while Oklahoma State dropped to 1–2, suffering its second straight loss. The defeat raises questions about the Cowboys’ offensive consistency and marks a rare home setback for head coach Mike Gundy, whose team had dominated the series for decades. OK State was coming off of a bye week, so the Pokes had plenty of time to prepare. Clearly, the person preparing them failed. And that person is Mike Gundy.
Things don't get any easier for the boys from Stillwater. Next up, Oklahoma State will host Baylor on Sept. 27 to open Big 12 play. Meanwhile Tulsa returns home to host American rival Tulane in the Green Wave's conference opener.
