(BCSNN) — The Big 12 Conference has formally reprimanded the University of Colorado following inappropriate chants directed at Brigham Young University during last weekend’s football game in Boulder. The league cited a violation of its sportsmanship standards, emphasizing that member institutions are responsible for maintaining respectful environments at home venues.
The incident occurred during the second half of Colorado’s home match-up against BYU, when sections of the student crowd engaged in chants deemed insensitive toward BYU’s religious affiliation. The conference reviewed video footage and game operations reports before issuing its statement, which included a reminder of the league’s commitment to inclusivity and mutual respect.
“Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference. While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday’s game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Colorado will receive a $50,000 fine in accordance with our Conference policies.”
- Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark
Colorado officials acknowledged the reprimand and indicated that internal reviews are underway to address crowd behavior and reinforce expectations for future home games. The university is expected to implement additional messaging and oversight measures in the student section, though no formal penalties were levied against the team or coaching staff.
This marks the first public disciplinary action involving Colorado since rejoining the Big 12 last year. The conference has taken a firmer stance on fan conduct in recent years, particularly in high-profile matchups involving religious or cultural sensitivities. BYU, which joined the Big 12 in 2023, has previously faced similar incidents on the road, prompting broader discussions about institutional accountability.
Looking ahead, Colorado (2–3, 0–2 Big 12) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, hosting TCU (3–1, 0–1) in Boulder. BYU (4–0, 1–0) will take the field the night before, welcoming West Virginia (2–3, 0–2) to LaVell Edwards Stadium for a Friday night showdown. Both programs are aiming to stay competitive in a crowded Big 12 race as October conference play heats up.
