(BCSNN) — No. 23 BYU improved to 5–0 overall and 2–0 in Big 12 play with a 38–24 win over West Virginia Friday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium. After missing a field goal on their opening possession, the Cougars scored touchdowns on three of their next four drives and never trailed, earning their first-ever win over the Mountaineers.

BYU totaled 518 yards of offense — 351 passing and 167 rushing — while converting 4-of-12 on third down. LJ Martin led the ground game with 90 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Parker Kingston added a rushing score and a 54-yard touchdown reception, both in the first quarter.

Defensively, the Cougars forced two turnovers via interceptions from Khalil Wilkins, but West Virginia still managed to convert 7-of-15 on third down. Faletau Satuala led BYU with 8 total tackles, while Tanner Wall and Therrian Alexander III both had interceptions, the latter taking it back 49 yards on the return.

“Obviously, I’m a little frustrated about some things that we didn’t do well, but I told the team that winning is hard, so you have to celebrate it,” said Kalani Sitake, BYU head coach. “I can’t wait to get to work on finding ways to improve as a team, and I have to do a better job as a head coach to make sure these guys play a complete 60 minutes.”

The Mountaineers did close the gap to 31–17 late in the third quarter when Khalil Wilkins scored on a 6 yard scamper, but BYU responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive capped by Martin’s second touchdown run to put things away for good on the night.

The Cougars have now won seven straight games at home and will travel to Arizona next Saturday for a primetime match-up against the Wildcats on ESPN2. As for the Mountaineers, there were some positives to takeaway from the late night loss, as Rich Rod's team played one of its best all-around games against one of the top teams in the country. Just not sure there's a place in the trophy case for moral victories.
