(BCSNN) — South Florida opened American Conference play with a dominant 54–26 win over Charlotte Friday night at Raymond James Stadium, improving to 4–1 overall and 1–0 in league action. The Bulls piled up 631 yards of offense — including 407 on the ground — and scored 23 first-quarter points to seize early control.
Quarterback Byrum Brown accounted for five touchdowns, throwing for 211 yards and four scores while rushing for a career-best 162 yards and another touchdown. It marked his sixth career 100-yard rushing game and second straight outing with five total touchdowns.
Freshman Jeremiah Koger caught his first career pass — a 38-yard touchdown — and finished with four receptions for 75 yards. Cartevious Norton, a Charlotte transfer, opened the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown run and totaled 69 yards on 13 carries before exiting with an upper-body injury in the fourth quarter.
USF’s defense forced four turnovers and held Charlotte to just 13 yards on its first eight possessions. Jair Murphy blocked a punt for a safety, Jarvis Lee grabbed his second interception of the season, and Jhalyn Shuler led the team with 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
The Bulls ran a season-high 97 plays and posted their second-highest yardage total under head coach Alex Golesh. Despite committing four turnovers and 10 penalties, USF never trailed and closed the game with back-to-back touchdowns to seal the win.
South Florida travels to North Texas next Friday for a primetime matchup in Denton. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
