(BCSNN) -- Jake Retzlaff’s four-yard touchdown pass to Javin Gordon with 35 seconds remaining lifted Tulane to a 26–19 victory over East Carolina on Thursday night at Yulman Stadium.
Retzlaff finished 26-of-36 for 347 yards and two touchdowns, nearly matching his career high. His final scoring drive covered 75 yards in 12 plays and capped a back-and-forth second half.
Tulane (5–1, 2–0 American) led 12–0 at halftime behind four field goals from Patrick Durkin, who set a school record for most in a half. ECU (3-3, 1–1) rallied with 16 unanswered points in the third quarter before Tulane regained the lead on a 63-yard strike to Zycarl Lewis Jr.
While Tulane came out on top in this one, head coach Jon Sumrall was less than pleased with the way his team got it done.
"We're a really sloppy football team that finds ways to win games," said Sumrall in his postgame interview on the field. "And I'm gonna lose my mind because we're so immature. We've gotta grow up fast. I'm glad we won. I'm not happy with how we played."
The Green Wave defense sealed the win with a final-minute stop, improving Tulane’s record to 37–11 since the start of the 2022 season — sixth-best in FBS.
Next up for Coach Sumrall and Tulane will be a contest against Army inside of Yulman Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 18. As for the Pirates, ECU Football will host Tulsa next Thursday night, Oct. 16, on ESPN.
