(BCSNN) — UAB has parted ways with head football coach Trent Dilfer after a 2–4 start to the 2025 season, the university announced. The decision follows a 53–33 loss to Florida Atlantic, marking the Blazers’ third straight defeat and extending their winless record in American Conference play.

The following is a statement from UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram:

We have made a decision to part ways with Head Football Coach Trent Dilfer. We agree that - unfortunately - our on-field performance has not lived up to the standard of winning we have for the program. This decision will allow us to move forward in the best long-term interest of the program. I have asked Alex Mortensen to serve as interim head coach to lead the team for the remainder of the season as we continue as a department and university to provide the support our student athletes need to compete. I wish Coach Dilfer the best and thank him for his class, tireless work and commitment during his tenure at UAB. While his efforts did not translate into a winning record, each young man who played for him will be a better person as a result.

Dilfer, 53, compiled a 9–21 record over two-plus seasons at UAB, never winning more than four games in a year. A former Super Bowl-winning quarterback with the Baltimore Ravens, Dilfer transitioned to coaching after a stint in broadcasting and a successful run at Lipscomb Academy, where he won two Tennessee state titles. His hiring in 2022 marked his first collegiate coaching role.

As noted in the release, offensive coordinator Alex Mortensen will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Mortensen, the son of late NFL analyst Chris Mortensen, has been with the program since Dilfer’s arrival and will lead the Blazers into their Week 7 matchup against Navy.
